The National St. Gotthard Museum is housed in the old Sust on the Gotthard Pass. In the exhibition, newly opened in 2022, original films and audio documents, authentic objects and a children's trail bring the history of the Gotthard to life, from its beginnings around 1200 to the present day. In this journey through the centuries, the tunnels and caverns hewn into the rock of the Gotthard are the leitmotif. The route leads through seven themed rooms, from the Urner Loch (the first Alpine tunnel) to the AlpTransit base tunnel, from the power station tunnel to military mountain fortifications. The new permanent exhibition kicks off with an extraordinary multimedia sound and image show on the upper floor, in which original and animated films, drawings, paintings and photographs are brought together to form a fascinating collage.
The permanent exhibition is supplemented by temporary exhibitions, which are designed by the Alpine Museum in Bern. The national museum for history and culture in the Alpine region has thus opened its first "branch" on the Gotthard Pass.
